Nine Days and Counting…

So…new trip, new blog, same old mixture of oddball fiction and snarky commentary mixed in with tales of the experience.  Back to Blogger, the home of my infamous ‘Hormones and Gray Hair’ blog from 2009.  ‘Bridges of Tonowanda County’, anyone?  Wordpress wants real money these days, so ‘Chezonboat’ will not be updated.  Too bad.  However, be advised that Shirley will undoubtably make an appearance in this blog, as will the Zika-spreading mosquitoes Goose and Maverick.

So to explain the name of this blog…. Vick was describing my upcoming trip for someone and she said I was going to ‘Fahiti’.  I looked at her and asked “Where?”  “Fahiti”, was her firm answer.  (I think alcohol was involved.). “No, I’m going to Fiji.”  “Well, you know what I meant,” she said.  And I had the name for this blog.  Writing is easy when you have such good help.

We fly to California to see Mitch and Marisa in a couple of days.  I fly out of SFO for Fiji on the 15th.  I get there two days later thanks to the International Date Line.  (Don’t ask me to explain - I can’t.). Expect Instagram posts and maybe even a YouTube channel.  I have an underwater sports camera and expect to post many snorkeling adventures.  Expect fair warning if a shark severs my leg.

So why Fiji?  Joe and Michelle (See ‘Chezonboat’; 2016 posts) had their sailboat Peregrine in the South Pacific for three plus years, winding up in Fiji.  They came back in late 2019 to visit friends and family and got trapped in the states by Covid.  While they were stuck here, Peregrine slipped her mooring, went on the reef, sustained hull damage and was broken into.  They returned in Spring 2022, got the boat all repaired and cruise-ready.  But Joe’s mother is old and ailing and they want to come back for the winter to be with her.  And - they don’t want the same thing to happen to Peregrine.  So they offered me a chance to come out to Fiji, sail the boat and keep a local presence should things go south.  (It is cyclone season there, Nov - March).  It took me a few milliseconds to agree.
